How Many Acrow Props Do I Need?

Acrow props are an extremely valuable tool for projects that require you to support heavy masonry loads, such as supporting a cavity wall. They can also be used when you’re removing structural support beams, and to perform other tasks that require the proper support of heavy loads using a vertical prop.

If you’re working on a large-scale construction or renovation project, you may be wondering how many acrow props you need, and how to set them up safely and properly. In this article, we’ll address this question, and ensure that you know how many props you need – and how to set them up safely.

The number of acrow props depends on these factors

This depends on a number of different factors, including:

  • The rating of each prop – The amount of weight that an acrow prop can support decreases with its length. A size 0 prop, for example, is the shortest, and can extend only about 1.1 to 1.8 metres. It can support up to 3,000 kilograms. On the other hand, a size 4 acrow prop can extend up to 4.9 metres – but can only support around 1,300 kilograms.
As a rule, you want to use the shortest possible acrow props for your project. And, if you are working on a project that requires a long acrow prop, such as a size 4, you will need more props to support the wall, compared to using a shorter, size 0 prop.
  • Angle of prop placement – Acrow props only reach their maximum structural load-bearing capacity when they are completely straight and “true.” A deviation of even 1-2 degrees can seriously impact the ability of an acrow prop to support a given load.
This is why, as a rule, it’s best to avoid using acrow props – period – if they cannot be supported vertically at the proper angle. In some cases, it may be safe to use acrow props if they are not perfectly straight, but more props will be required. Consult with a structural engineer to determine the right path forward if you cannot guarantee completely vertical placement of an acrow prop.
  • Usage of supporting scaffolding – Acrow props can be braced using standard scaffolding materials, and we highly recommend doing so for any structural supports that use 2 or more acrow props. Horizontal bracing can help ensure that, even in a situation where one prop fails, the others will be able to stay upright, and continue to brace the wall or support beam.
  • Length and weight of supported structure – As a rule of thumb, 1 pair of props is usually recommended per metre of opening width. The longer the beam or wall is that you’re supporting, the more acrow props you should use.

Naturally, there are other things that may affect the number of acrow props that you should place for your project, such as the size of your top plate and bottom plate, whether or not you’re using timber needles or strongboys to support masonry, and a number of other factors.

In short, while the above tips are useful, you should never just rely on our advice when you’re placing your acrow props. You need to consult with a professional, experienced structural engineer, who can determine the load bearing capacity of your project, the number of acrow props required. Not only is this a good idea to ensure the safety of your workers and the property on which they are working, but it’s often also a legal requirement.

So don’t try to go it alone. Hire a qualified structural engineer, and you’ll be able to ensure that you have plenty of acrow props – and can complete your project quickly, on the proper budget, and without endangering the safety of your workers.
