The Story of Sydney Eye Tower Construction
The Sydney Eye Tower, also known as the Sydney Tower Eye, is an iconic landmark that dominates the skyline of Australia’s largest city. This 309-meter tower is one of Sydney’s most popular tourist attractions, attracting millions of visitors every year.
Back in the 1960s when the New South Wales government launched a competition to design a high-rise building that would serve as a TV and radio broadcasting station. The competition was won by the architectural firm of Donald Crone and Associates, and the tower’s design was finalized in 1970
Beginning of Sydney Eye Tower Construction
Sydney Tower Construction began in the late 1970s, with the first 52 shops opening in 1972. The office component was completed in 1974. Finally, the Sydney Tower, which marked the final stage of the complex, opened to the public in September 1981. One of the challenges during the tower’s construction was the high winds that blew through Sydney’s central business district. To combat this, a unique scaffolding system was developed that allowed the tower to sway in the wind, ensuring the safety of the workers.
The tower’s striking design has made it capable of withstanding earthquakes and extreme wind conditions, ranking it as one of the safest buildings in the world.
