How to Use Maxi Props?

The no-BS guide to staying safe, saving time & doing it right the first time

Ever used an Maxi Prop that looked steady… until it wasn’t?

You’ve probably seen it before, some workmate on-site trying to hold up a concrete lintel or a bearer with a dodgy prop job. It’s off-centre, crooked, or sitting on a milk crate (yeah, we’ve seen that too). Next thing you know, it’s not just unsafe,  it’s holding up the whole crew.

Maxi props might seem simple, but using them wrong can mean serious injuries, delays, or fines. And let’s be honest, you don’t want WorkSafe breathing down your neck.

Let’s break it down, properly, tradie to tradie.

What’s an Maxi Prop Anyway?

An Maxi prop (also called a builder’s prop or adjustable steel prop) is your go-to for temporary support during construction, demolition, or repairs. Perfect for holding up:

  • Ceilings
  • Beams
  • Staircases
  • Formwork

Or anything overhead that could crash down and wreck your day

They’re adjustable, dead simple to use, if you know how.

How to Use Maxi Props, Step by Step

Here’s how to set them up without the guesswork:

1. Pick the Right Size

Maxi props come in different sizes ( we offer from 0.70m, 1.2m, 2.1m, 3.2m, 4.5m up to 5.6m. ). Choose one that fits your height range without over-extending.

2. Use a Solid Base

No planks, no bricks, no footy boots. Use a proper base plate on firm, level ground to stop sinking or slipping.

3. Tighten It Right

Extend the inner tube to just under the load. Then, spin the collar to lift the head snug under the surface. Don’t over-crank it, it’s support, not a jack.

4. Secure the Top

Use strongboys or U-heads if you’re holding brickwork or beams. Never just lean the load on the prop head, that’s asking for trouble.

5. Double-Check It

Always check for:

  • Straight alignment
  • Even weight distribution
  • No movement or buckling

And never work under a prop that hasn’t been checked.

Why It Matters

Using Maxi props right isn’t just about ticking the compliance box, it’s about:

  • Keeping your crew safe
  • Finishing jobs faster
  • Avoiding fines and downtime
  • Protecting your business reputation

At Australian Scaffold, we stock heavy-duty, fully certified Maxi props made to meet AS/NZS 3610 standards, ready to ship, hire, or click & collect.

Bottom Line?

You wouldn’t use a blunt blade or a cheap drill, so don’t cut corners with your props. Do it right the first time. Keep your site tight, your team safe, and your Friday knock-off stress-free.
