History of Solar in Australia

History of Solar in Australia. Solar power is one of the most abundant energy sources on Earth, and it has been used by humans for thousands of years. Solar energy was first used for practical purposes in the late 19th century when French physicist Augustin Mouchot patented a solar-powered engine. However, it was not until the 1950s that solar technology began to be used on a large scale. In 1954, American engineer Bell Labs developed the first practical solar cell. Solar cells are made from semiconductor materials that convert sunlight into electricity.

Solar cells were initially used in spacecraft and satellites, but they soon found their way into consumer products like calculators and watches. In the 1970s, advances in solar cell technology led to the development of photovoltaic (PV) panels, which are now the most common type of solar panel. PV panels are made up of many individual solar cells, and they can be used to generate electricity for homes and businesses.

The PV industry has grown rapidly in recent years, with annual installations increasing by more than 30% since 2010. Australia is one of the world’s leading markets for residential PV systems, with more than 1.5 million systems installed as of 2018. The Solar Energy Industries Association estimates that the Australian solar industry employs more than 9,000 people and generates AU$3.6 billion in revenue annually.

Where did it begin?

1839: The photovoltaic effect was discovered by a French physicist named Alexandre-Edmund Becquerel. His research became the basis of many solar technologies used today.
