General Guidelines for Dismantling & Assembling a Mobile Scaffold

Mobile Scaffold Safe Work- Under current national certification requirements, certification is mandatory when a person or object could fall more than four (4) metres from a scaffold or from an adjacent open floor.

Basic Scaffold Ticket- Mobile Scaffold Safe Work

To dismantle or assemble a prefabricated mobile scaffold greater than 4m, a Basic Scaffolding Certificate is required. Individuals without a scaffolding certificate may only dismantle or assemble a mobile scaffold under the supervision of a certified scaffolder. However, a scaffolding certificate is not necessary for using a mobile scaffold.

General Guidelines for the Safe Use of a Mobile Scaffold

• Display a sign indicating that only authorised staff are permitted to use the mobile scaffold.

• Utilise the scaffold exclusively on a hard, level surface. Position it no closer than 1 metre to any slab edge, penetration, or other stepdown, unless a fixed fence, rail, or suitably high upturn is in place.

• Inspect for physical defects before each use, including the access ladder. Refer to the manufacturer’s manual if available.

• Ensure the scaffold is level and that all sections are securely pinned or appropriately secured.

• Minimise scaffold loads, including tools and other equipment, and remove them when the scaffold is not in use. Do not exceed the scaffold’s working load as specified in the manufacturer’s manual. Safe Work Australia

• Hoist heavy tools, equipment, and supplies rather than carrying them up by hand.

• Lock or chock all castors to prevent any possible movement. Castors must comply with AS 1576.2 and be capable of being locked when work is performed from the scaffold. Safe Work Australia+1Safe Work Australia+1

• If the castors incorporate adjustable legs, ensure that the surface gradient does not exceed 5 degrees, unless you implement provisions to take the load off the castors during scaffold use.

• When practicable, place portable barriers and lights around the scaffold while in use.

• Install guardrails and toeboards on all open sides.

• Secure materials before moving the mobile scaffold.

• Remove all loads, including tools, after using the scaffold.
