According to Workplace Safety Australia, falls rank as one of the leading causes of workplace fatalities, second only to vehicle collisions. Additionally, apart from the devastating toll in terms of permanent injuries and lives lost, businesses face annual losses running into billions of dollars. These losses stem from substantial increases in insurance premiums, workers’ compensation claims, product liability costs, and various other related expenses.

Scaffolding accidents are prevalent in the construction industry, with New South Wales leading in falls from heights causing injury or death at 37%, followed by Victoria at 29%. Notably, 58% of fatalities resulting from falls from heights occur on roofs or ladders, and half of these incidents involve falls from heights of less than 4 meters.

To reduce the incidence of falls, consider the following measures:

– Ensure that every floor hole where a worker could inadvertently walk is adequately guarded. This can be achieved using a railing and toe-board or by covering the floor hole.

– Provide guardrails and toe-boards around all elevated open-sided platforms, floors, or runways.

– Regardless of the height involved, when a worker can potentially fall into or onto hazardous machinery or equipment (e.g., a vat of acid or a conveyor belt), it is crucial for employers to install guardrails and toe-boards to prevent worker falls and injuries.

– Depending on the specific job requirements, other fall protection measures may be necessary, such as safety harnesses and lifelines, safety nets, stair railings, and handrails.
