New Trestle Design

30 Years of Progress: A Firsthand Look at the Evolution of Scaffolding

With over 30 years in the building industry, I’ve seen scaffolding change dramatically. Safety, efficiency, and design have all improved. Today, scaffolding systems are safer, faster to install, and better suited to modern construction. As a result, we now approach height-related tasks with greater confidence and care.

When I first started, contractors had to bring their own scaffolding. Often, this meant makeshift setups that were far from safe. An example of this was in the early 1980s, I worked for a builder who used 44-gallon drums and timber planks. For single-storey work, we laid the drums on their side. For two-storey jobs, we stacked them upright. Although common back then, these methods were unstable and dangerous compared to today’s systems. Thankfully, the industry has since moved toward more reliable and compliant solutions.

Rethinking Safety: Beyond Working at Height

The Scaffolding industry has made big strides in protecting workers at height. New systems meet strict safety standards and speed up job completion. In addition, they reduce the risks and liabilities that come with traditional methods. However, we still overlook one key area—tasks at low heights.

Too often, people underestimate the risks or avoid safer options because of cost. As a consequence, many job sites remain vulnerable where protection matters just as much. This mindset leaves a gap in workplace safety that we can’t ignore.

The Future of Low-Height Safety: New Trestle Design

At Australian Scaffolds, we’re closing that gap. By investing in innovation, we’ve created low-height solutions designed and manufactured right here in Australia. Our goal is to make safer systems that are also fast, affordable, and easy to use.

One standout product is our new trestle design. It replaces outdated, risky setups with a strong, simple, and safe alternative. Because it’s easy to assemble and transport, contractors can stay efficient without cutting corners. Furthermore, this trestle saves time, cuts costs, and meets safety standards.

In short, as we keep improving scaffolding for high work, we must also protect workers at every level. Australian Scaffolds leads the way by delivering smart, safe systems for all kinds of jobs—from the ground up.
