New Trestle Design

With over 30 years of experience in the building industry, I’ve witnessed firsthand the significant improvements in scaffolding, working at height safety, and new trestle design innovations. Over the decades, scaffolding solutions have evolved to become much safer, more efficient, and tailored to modern construction needs. As a result, these advancements have transformed the way we approach construction safety and height-related tasks.

When I first entered the industry, however, it was up to each contractor to provide their own scaffolding. This often meant makeshift solutions, which were far from ideal. For instance, in the early 80s, I worked for a contractor who would tow a trailer filled with empty 44-gallon drums and wooden planks. For single-storey work, the drums were placed on their side, and for two-storey tasks, they were stacked on edge. Although these methods were common at the time, they were far from the safe, reliable scaffolding systems—including the new trestle design—we use today.

Reflecting on 30 Years in the Building Industry: Improvements in Working at Height

While the industry has made tremendous strides in creating safer and more secure working environments at height—something we should all be proud of—there still seems to be a missed opportunity when it comes to providing safer, more productive solutions for tasks at lower heights. Moreover, as we continue to improve scaffolding safety and efficiency, it is crucial that we also focus on enhancing solutions for tasks that don’t require working at height.

I’m not quite sure why, but it seems that when working at lower heights the risk is mostly overlooked either because the risk is not considered or the solution is prohibitively expensive. Additionally, Australian Scaffolds is working hard to address this problem with an all Australian designed and manufactured low height, low cost, fast and safe scaffold system, including our new trestle design.
