What is an Maxi Prop?
An Maxi prop is a telescopic, tubular steel piece of construction equipment used for temporary support. You may also know it by several other names, including shore prop, acro prop, acro jack, and post shores. The prop adjusts in height through a wide diameter screw thread on the outside of the tube. This screw thread allows users to tighten the prop once in place, making it easier to adjust the load each prop bears.
Note that the safe working load (SWL) for each prop depends on its size (refer to the table for details). As a rule, the SWL decreases as the prop extends.
Maxi Prop Uses
Primarily, you use Maxi props for shoring to provide temporary support during building repairs or alterations. For example, you can use them to support an existing vertical beam while removing or restoring other supports. When workers need to support masonry, they position strongboys into the bed joints and then place an Maxi prop.
In addition, Maxi props can support existing windows or doorways, either directly or using strongboys. The base and top plates of the props measure 150mm x 150mm, making them ideal for supporting vertical loads. However, if sideways force occurs, the props may topple. To prevent this, you should strutt or brace the props using scaffolding tubes.
While the Maxi prop was originally designed for vertical support, its range has expanded. For instance, you now use shoring ‘push and pull’ props with swiveling footplates to support concrete formwork. Similarly, trench struts support horizontal trench work and feature a ‘claw’ design on their baseplates for added stability.
Maxi Propping Information
To calculate how many props you need, divide the total weight by the kN capacity of each prop. Additionally, adding bracing to the propping system increases its capacity and stability. For your reference, 1 kN equals 101.98 kilograms-force.
Most importantly, always consult a professional before starting any propping or shoring projects. An incorrectly executed propping job can be disastrous, putting lives at risk and leading to costly repairs.
